Strip Off With...Greg Genre

In support of The People's Kitchen

A Performance in support of THE PEOPLES KITCHEN, A soup Kitchen which provides Fr
We are not here to see through one another, we are here to see one another through’ (Alison Kay, Founder)

About the performer

Greg Genre is the pseudonym of composer and performer Greg Kelly. The name refers to how he blends a range of influences to forge his own compositional styles. In etymological terms Greg comes from the Greek ‘Gregorious’ which became ‘Gregariouis’ meaning sociable or liking the company of other people. Genre derives from the French meaning type or kind. Greg Genre thus refers to how he herds together a range of styles and types of music in his compositions and also to how as a human being he enjoys communing with all people independent of age, gender, ethnicity etc. The songs you will hear tonight showcase his take on rap music and perhaps could be labelled or understood as a form of acoustic rap. Greg blends rhythmical slam poetry with acoustic guitar riffs and chord sequences. The guitar replaces the sampler and the rhythmical words ramble along in varying, complex rhythms created from his spoken dialect.

About the performance

The aim of this performance it to connect songs which speak of injustice and inequality with a direct social cause. The Strip Off idea is not only a comedic ploy to make my words more palatable but also a direct description of the performance style itself. In a world in which pop music has become increasingly synonymous with the material, the image and the package, Greg presents pop music stripped down to the basics. This performance is an attempt to reaffirm the importance of lyrical content and also a comment on how performers have a heightened responsibility for the messages that they communicate as well as the groove that they create with music.

About the cause

The Peoples Kitchen are currently asking for donations of clothing and food to prepare for the harsh winter months ahead. If you have brought any donations please hand them to Greg at the end of the performance. The Tide Of Writing

For periods of time like the tide I go out to accumulate experiences, driftwood and debris.
That then stay lodged in the liquid sea of my brain as memories.
Ebbing in suddenly as waves, poems and songs appear
never in control of their own splash and crash, on to the shore of the page.
Instead their is a greater Oceanic law behind them all.
As my thoughts drift in fluid ink waves I trust in the guiding hand of the ocean, nature, God...

Inspirations 2.3 Meditations abd Mantras by Swami Vishnu-Devananda

'All life is interconnected.  Animals inhale in oxygen, the by-product of plants, and exhale carbon dioxide. In their bodies the oxygen combines with glucose to produce energy for the various bodily functions. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen which is then used by animals. They take nutrients from the soil and use the sunlight for photosynthesis. Man eats the plants for nourishment and when he dies, his body is returned to earth where it becomes food for the plants. This is but one small example of the complicated and interdependent relationship that exists among all things. It hardly seems possible that such a world could have been created by an accident of nature.

Relationships like these exist throughout the cosmos. Consider the size of the universe. It is impossible that these miracles occur only on earth. How many suns with planets can there be in our galaxy, and how many galaxies can there be? How large is this universe? Its size cannot be imagined, nor can the number of planets capable of supporting life be counted.

There are physical laws which cause the planets to rotate and revolve around the sun in certain, precise ways. These same laws cause whole solar systems, indeed even galaxies, to hurtle through space at tremendous speeds- all in perfect coordination. These laws could not have come about accidently without an originating cause. Only a guiding intelligence could be responsible.' (p.123-124)

2013:

Life is divine, its is a miracle. A miracle which cannot be explained by mere coincidence.  Life is about realising the oneness of all, that all comes from one infinite source of love (God). Lift the fog of ignorance, deny that we are all separate,  unconnected bodies and minds. In truth we are all interconnected, all spirit, all pure consciousness. (get of the box box box)
